Telogen Effluvium - Stress and Hair Loss

Extreme stress or shock such as loss of a loved one or divorce, or physical stress including illness, surgery, high fever, childbirth, certain medications, eating disorders, or diets, can cause a sudden, noticeable increase in hair loss.

This type of hair loss is called “telogen effluvium” (TE).

TE is thought to be due to significant hormonal changes which cause the hair follicles to prematurely enter their ‘resting stage’ (telogen phase) and subsequently be shed.

With TE, hair loss is diffuse (over the entire scalp) and usually occurs anywhere from 1 to 4 months after the stressful event (but can take longer).

The good news is that hair will typically regrow once the stressful situation or condition has resolved. Though recovery can take a few months, treatment other than general supportive measures such as a healthy diet and key supplements, is usually not necessary,.

For speedier hair regrowth, consider Hair Essentials™ - its unique blend of over 20 herbs and nutrients support and nourish your follicles to promote healthy, thicker, faster new hair growth!
